BOOK CULTURE VS LOOK CULTURE - SIRASRI
After the dog, a man’s best friend is always considered to be the books. Irrespective of how the world shapes up, reading is something which has picked up among many human beings. During the 80s, book reading was a lot because there was no home entertainment. There was only the transistor and the tape recorder. So, while reading a book and imagining something there was a kick.
But in 90s things changed, after the advent of TV the visual form has become rampant. People found that to be more attractive and got addicted to it. During the 90s it was only the Doordarshan which was there and it was precious. Many used to wait for a week to watch their favorite programs and thereby the significance of reading and books began to falter. Cut to the present, the scene has changed totally.
Anytime, anything can be seen on Youtube. Even we carry ipad, I phone and technology has made communication and knowledge easier. But just like a circle comes complete, the tradition of book reading has picked up. For a change people are taking to books and have begun seeking passion in reading once again. In that aspect, the likes of Chetan Bhagat, Amish Tripathy and others have emerged.
In the west the book culture is high and foreigners keep reading a lot while travelling to work or during their leisure. But our folks don’t read except magazines that offer entertainment. They don’t read serious books. With this, an overdose of entertainment has taken place in India and this has pushed many to the conventional form of recreation ie reading. To help that, devices like kindle and tablets have come in.
The readers have increased in trains and flights but still it is not ruled out that many people are passing time through reading. Those who choose different form of entertainment after getting bored by video content they are getting back to books. On the other hand, Indian writers are becoming popular and the writing is getting better than what it used to be ten years ago.
On an interesting note, the western authors still hold weight and having a book written by popular author carries a lot of prestige and image. Many are getting such books and putting them in their shelves or table to create an impact. Well, the book culture is also helping the look culture that way.
